Business Directory Submission & Local Citations
Submitting your business, claiming ownership and optimizing your listing at the top business directories is one of the fastest ways to gain backlinks and build local rankings online. Claiming your business details at online directories also creates “local citations”. Citations are not quite the same as back links but they are just as important.
Citations are “mentions” of your business name and contact details on other directories and web pages, even if there is no link to your website. An example of a citation might be an online yellow pages directory where your business is listed, but not linked to.
It can also be from your local chamber, or a local business association where your business details can be found, even if they are not linking at all to your website.
Citations are a very important part in the ranking algorithms of the major search engines. All things considered, a business with a large number of citations will likely rank higher than a business with fewer citations. This can be especially true for highly competitive local markets.
